Coil Lifespan & Tips to Make It Last Longer

A new coil typically lasts between two to four weeks, but this depends on the user’s vaping habits. Improper or heavy use may burn the coil even on the first puff.

Therefore, after filling a new coil with e-liquid, you should wait 10-15 minutes before using it.

Avoid frequent consecutive puffs; it's recommended to leave a few minutes between draws. Otherwise, firing on dry cotton may cause your coil to burn quickly.

It is especially recommended to use high-quality e-liquids. Homemade-style products can shorten your coil’s lifespan.

Coils have recommended wattage ranges written on them, and should be used within those limits.

Additionally, most e-liquids leave a thin residue layer when vaporized.

This accumulates on your coil or wicks and clogs your device.

Here are some benefits of regularly cleaning your vaping device:

Prolongs the Lifespan of Your Tank and Coil:

Regular cleaning of your vape tank and coil helps extend their lifespan, while lack of cleaning causes faster coil burnout.

Better Performance:

Regular cleaning removes residue that may reach the atomizer and alter the flavor of your e-liquid.

Residue can also block airflow holes and lead to overheating or dry hits.

Better Flavor:

Vaping pleasure lies in the flavor experience.

A clean device provides fresher and tastier flavors, making it essential to clean your atomizer and coils regularly.

When Should You Clean Your Vaping Device?

Your vaping and maintenance habits after each use can extend or reduce the life of your device and coil.

If you experience a burnt taste while using the device, it’s time to clean it.

Another sign is flavor ghosting—when you switch e-liquids without cleaning the residue of the previous one.

Unless you're deliberately mixing flavors, regular cleaning is recommended.

Whether you stick to one flavor or not, regular cleaning of your device is advisable.

There are two types of cleaning for vape devices.

The first is a quick rinse (with warm water).

The second is deep cleaning using unflavored alcohol like vodka.

How to Clean Your Vape Atomizer?

All vaping devices, regardless of type, share the following main components:

A Tank (atomizer):

The tank holds the e-liquid that is vaporized, often integrated with the atomizer.

A Coil: This heating element turns the e-liquid into vapor.

A Battery: The power source for the unit. Some allow voltage and temperature control. Box mods house the battery inside.

To clean your vape tank (atomizer) properly, regardless of the method, follow these steps:

1 Disassemble your device.

Remove the top and bottom of the tank and discard any remaining e-liquid.

Remember where each part goes—take photos or videos if needed.

The next step can be done in two ways.

2 Rinse the glass section under warm water (for a quick clean):

Hold the detached glass section under hot running water for about 20 seconds.

This helps rinse off any remaining e-liquid.

3 Wipe with high-proof alcohol (for deep cleaning).

Use unflavored alcohol like vodka to break down stubborn residue.

Dampen a microfiber cloth or paper towel and clean the affected areas, then rinse with warm water.

You can also use a jewelry cleaner for stubborn build-up.

4 Dry with a paper towel:

Insert a small paper towel or microfiber cloth into one end of the tank and pull it through to the other end to absorb excess water.

5 Air Dry

Let the parts air dry for at least 10 minutes before reassembling and refilling. Avoid heat or direct sunlight to prevent damage.

How to Prepare and Clean Your Coil?

One way to extend your new coil's life and improve vape quality is to prime it properly.

Do not vape immediately after installing a new coil, not even after filling the tank.

Your next step should be priming the coil to make it ready for use, which also saves you from buying a new one prematurely.

After replacing your coil, the wick inside remains dry because the liquid hasn't saturated it yet.

Firing on dry cotton risks burning the coil.

Your best option is to let the device stand upright for about 15 minutes before firing to allow full saturation.

Alternatively, you can manually drip a few drops of e-liquid through the coil’s wicking ports to prime it faster.

Be careful not to overdo it, or liquid might spit into your mouth when firing.

After saturating the coil manually, wait 5 minutes and take a few dry pulls (without firing), then you may vape.

If you're interested in maximizing coil longevity:

Lower your power settings (use minimum wattage) to prevent coil wear.

Also reduce your vaping frequency, as rapid consecutive puffs directly affect coil life.

(If you're taking puffs back to back, leave a one-minute gap between each.)

Not all vape coils can be cleaned.

Coils in some pod systems are not cleanable. The only solution for dirty or faulty pod coils is replacement.

The other type includes two kinds of replaceable coils: pre-built coil heads and rebuildable coils with wick installation—these can be cleaned.

Although replaceable coils can be cleaned to some extent, absorbent wick materials still retain some residue and take longer to dry, so cleaning isn't always ideal.

Cleaning your coil is simple, just follow this checklist:

1 Remove the wicks from the coils

2 Dry the coils gently

3 Detach the atomizer from your mod

4 Rinse the coil under running water while lightly brushing with a toothbrush

5 Rinse once more

6 To remove water droplets, fire the coil at very low wattage (if you're not experienced, avoid this to prevent burning) or let it air dry at room temperature
