If you've recently quit smoking and switched to vaping, you might feel a bit overwhelmed by everything you need to learn about your new activity. It's true that a more advanced vape mod will require some knowledge — but once you're comfortable, it's totally worth it. One thing you might encounter as a new vaper is the surprising sensation of taking a drag from your vape, only to inhale a lungful of unpleasant, burnt-tasting vapor. The good news is, this burnt taste doesn't mean there's a problem with your device or vaping in general.
What causes a burnt taste?
The answer to this question, given by experienced vapers, is "you usually burnt the coils." However, the more accurate answer is that you have actually burnt the wick (the cotton/wick wrapped around the coils). Here are a few reasons why this can happen:
- Your coils aren't primed. When you get a new coil, it's important to prime it for use, or saturate the wick for a few minutes before you start vaping. You need to thoroughly wet the wick because dry cotton, of course, burns. If your coil is new or hasn't been used for a while, make sure the wick is fully saturated.

- You didn't allow enough time. In addition to neglecting to prime your coil at all, not waiting long enough is another common reason your first hit might taste burnt. It's crucial to give your wick ample time to fully saturate with e-liquid before use. Otherwise, air pockets will remain within the wick, allowing those parts to burn, and — naturally — the vapor you inhale will also taste burnt.
- You're vaping at too high wattage. This mistake can cost you your coils, or at least cause your coils to temporarily burn and require a good cleaning. (Touchscreens can be particularly problematic, as they are easy to accidentally "tap" and change settings.) Make it a habit to check your vape before use to make sure you haven't accidentally turned up the wattage too high.
- You're not keeping your tank full. Your coil head has small wicking holes or ports on its sides, and you should not allow these connection points to become exposed if you want to avoid that burnt taste. Repeatedly allowing your ports to become exposed will shorten the lifespan of your coil and its wick. If you're vaping with an empty tank, prime your coils and refill — then keep your tank full in the future and never let the e-liquid level drop too low.
These are a few common reasons for that dreaded burnt taste or dry hit. Luckily, it's not a huge problem, especially if you're careful about keeping new coils ready. As you gain experience, you'll learn to recognize the signs of a burnt coil and take appropriate action, whether that means giving your coil a good cleaning or replacing it entirely.
